Hospitality Resume

Before you begin writing your hospitality resume, make sure that you really want to do this on your own. There are many professional resume writers and resume services you may want to hire to help you. Sometimes their expertise makes all the difference between getting and not getting that first interview.

If you decide to write your own resume, the best place to start is to analyze resume examples that utilize common resume formats. This will give you a good idea of the resume templates being used successfully today to land hospitality jobs.

Next, look at hospitality-related web sites and publications to help you choose the key words you need to emphasize in your resume so that scanning software used to identify strong job candidates won’t pass you by.

Performance is the key to a successful career in the business world, in general and hospitality jobs, in particular. The most important thing while searching for a job in the hospitality business is that your résumé needs to demonstrate your skills and talents that can contribute to the employer's success.

Display a Clear Career Goal:

Be sure to include a Career Summary section in you hospitality job resume, which will grab the prospective employer’s attention immediately by highlighting your most important attributes. Avoid listing vague skills or clichés like "excellent communication and interpersonal skills.” Instead, provide hard facts about your work history or training that would prompt the hiring manager to call you for an interview. For example:

Objective – “Successful professional qualified by ten years of visible achievements in the food service/hospitality industry seeks a position in a three-star or higher hotel.

Highlight your Achievements:

Briefly highlight your responsibilities in your hospitality job experience such as territory, budget and supervisory responsibilities. Always provide a list of your top achievements that are convincing and meaningful even to a person outside of the hospitality establishment. Go beyond stating your results by describing how you achieved these results. Refer to these powerful examples:

  • Recognized for cultivating long term, stable staff with team-player philosophies; credited with increasing revenues 167% over three years by increasing customer base and average check.
  • Demonstrated skills accommodating private parties featuring corporate heads, sports figures and celebrities; credited with high degree of diplomacy resolving problems without sacrificing customer relations.
  • Emphasis on inventory control and business development, generated $25,000 monthly sales, and recognized with region’s lowest liquor cost out of 218 stores

Important points to note while describing accomplishments in your hospitality job resume:

Try to energize your job descriptions by describing how you went above and beyond your job duties. Think about how you performed in each of your positions as a hospitality job professional to develop accomplishment statements that will create a significant impact on the potential employer. Include factors like what was expected of you and how well you met those expectations; the methods you used to generate strong results; awards won if any; and overcoming obstacles that resulted in a positive outcome. Note these points:

  • How your previous employer benefited from your expertise.
  • Your performance in comparison with your peers.
  • Your involvement in product development or a new product launch.
  • Overcoming of serious obstacles such as selling in poor market conditions
  • Leadership roles
  • Repeat business or a high number of referrals due to your dedication to customer service.
  • Successful vendor negotiation.
  • Service on any committees or boards.

Skills/ Areas of expertise:

Your skills should evolve in accordance with the ever-growing world of the hospitality sector. Always remember to include your continuing education, in-service training, outside seminars, courses, certifications, or any other experience that displays dedication to your profession.

Keywords to include while describing skills in your hospitality job resume:

  • Strategic Planning
  • P&L Management
  • Budget Planning
  • Merchandise Displays
  • Inventory Control
  • Procurement
  • Systems Management
  • Incentive Structures
  • Performance Standards
  • Safety and Compliance

In addition to these important guidelines for constructing your resume, there are many resume tips plus simple resume formats to follow that will help you compose a great resume. Some of the more important rules are as follows:

  • Never write more than two pages.
  • Use a format that makes the resume inviting and easy-to-read.
  • Think about your accomplishments and make them the focus of the resume
  • Tell the truth.
  • Use buzzwords and keywords.
  • If possible, tailor your resume for a specific job, not just a specific industry.

  • Ensure all dates link up and leave no suspicious gaps if you are using a chronological format.
  • If there are gaps in your work history, use a functional resume format.
  • Make sure your cover letter is as good as your resume.

Job Interview Fun

Just in case you thought you did poorly in a job interview, read these anecdotes from executives who actually encountered these situations during an interview:

"... said he was so well-qualified that if he didn't get the job, he would prove the company's management was incompetent."

"... bounced up and down on my carpet and told me I must be highly thought of by the company because I was given such a thick carpet."

"An applicant came in wearing only one shoe. She explained that the other shoe was stolen off her foot in the bus."

"...corrected my grammar during the interview."
